Adoptive stepparents, foster parents, and partners
susantgardner
Hi all,

My name is Susan, my husband and I have been foster parents for the last 7 or 8 years and have adopted 3 children and are in the process of adopting our 4th.  My children's ages are g-9, b-11, g-16 and g-16.  The two youngest have been with us the longest and are special needs children.  They have genetic disabilities that render them learning disabled.  The oldest two are teenage girls - need I say more?

We have a lot to offer in the way of advice and even more to learn from our fellow foster/adoptive parent friends out there.  Thanks for accepting me into the group.

Name: Shane

Spouse/Partner(s) Name: Lisa

Where you're from: Iowa

Kids (names, ages, how they came into your life):
Sean, 10, he is my first born son from a previous marriage
Ashley, 7, she is my eldest "step-daughter" from my current marriage
Nathaniel, 7, he is my middle son from the same previous marriage above
Richard, 6, he is my youngest "step-daughter" from my current marriage and biological brother to Ashley
Thomas, 5, he is my youngest son from the previous marriage mentioned above
Orianna, 15 months, she is my youngest child and the only one I have with Lisa.

Anything else you'd like to share about your family:
We have had our challenges over the last 3-4 years, but overall we remain a very close family. Some of the reasons I joined this community are the current custody battle I am in with my ex-wife, Jennifer, and the possibility of changing Ashley and Richard's last names at least, maybe even adopting them at some point. That is all I have for now.

Anything else you'd like to share about your family: Heavyn and Carri are from my first marriage, which broke up when I was pregnant for Carri. My ex-husband asked Travis to adopt the girls when Carri was about 2 years old, and has been out of thier lives ever since. Travis has lovingly raised the girls as his own.

Name: Melissa

Spouse/Partner(s) Name: Michael

Where you're from: Des Moines, Iowa

Kids (names, ages, how they came into your life): Liza is 9 and is my daughter via stepparent adoption. Her father had raised her on his own since she was 6 months old, started dating me when she was a year old, and we all moved in together when she was 18 months old. My adoption of her was finalized when she was 4. Rayanne and Isabelle are our 5 1/2 year old identical twin girls and I am 34 weeks pregnant with another, as-of-yet-unnamed little girl

Anything else you'd like to share about your family: One of the big challenges we're currently facing with respect to Liza's adoption is that she is unaware as of yet and we're not sure how to tell her. Her biological mother last took a visit with her when she was 25 months old, so she has forgotten her completly. A lot of the time, I wind up letting our adoption situation fall into the back of my mind, Liza has been in my life so long, it's like I forget she wasn't always a part of it.
